It scared me then and continues to scare me every time I watch it (I have the DVD). When I'm driving and see a big 18-wheeler in my rear-view, I flashback to David Mann (Dennis Weaver) trying to outrun and outwit the "monster" truck in his little Plymouth Valiant. My favorite line has to be when he pulls into the gas station/snake-a-rama and asks where the phone is. The lady tells him "out back", and he says to himself "weird place for a phone booth!" as he walks past the cages full of rattlesnakes! As good as the DVD is, it would be even better in letterbox (the one I have is in pan/scan). The DVD also has interviews with Steven Spielberg about the making of "Duel" and with Richard Matheson about his short story that was Spielberg's inspiration.

Re: What Movie Have You Changed Your Mind About?

Yep, do agree on Easy Rider...but for me, its become more so over time...the ending just sucks!
I mean, whats the point of it all? Dont become a hippie/freak 'cause some redneck, country boys are gonna blow you away in the end if you enter their turf? Give me a break! That still doesnt top Night of the Living Dead where the guy survived a night of zombies only to become target practice for the good guys who thought he was one of the walking stiffs in the morning. Sorry for any plot spoilers but would assume most of us movie fans have seen these by now ;). For me personally, though, I'd have to go with Godfather 3. I used to think it was cleverly playing off parts of GF1 for the way Pacino ended (ala Brando); but maybe Coppola wouldve been better served using the Biblical admontion: you live by the sword (or gun in this case) then you die by the sword---as happened with most, if not all, of the lesser characters in each movie! Why play favorites with the stars when theyre just as slimy a bunch of mobsters as the rest of the ones they whacked or at least gave the go ahead to do so to? But, on the other hand, Ive always welcomed idea of a possible GF4 to pick-up the series with Andy Garcia taking over the clan. :)

Re: Hill Valley or Bust: A Journey Back to 1985

Good read! I also read that Rita Hayworth's singing voice was routinely dubbed. The Mame number might be Rita's real voice because it's not musically difficult, but Rita was a dancer not a singer, and the studio didn't want her lack of singing ability to get out.

Re: Daredevils of the West: Return to the Saturday Matinee

Anybody remember Lash Larue? Not long ago, however, TCM ran it (what would we do without TCM?). I watched and found it a moving, thought provoking film. All of Powell's films are thought provoking and can be watched many times in the space of a lifetime. Since I didn't watch it during WWII, I wasn't interested in it as a propaganda piece, but as a character portrait of a complicated man who views the world in black and white. Ironic, since Powell's films are drenched in color. I can see how Churchill might have disliked the film, as in some ways Churchill and Blimp have similar attitudes. Churchill was a great leader but was staunchly conservative and a British imperialist. Churchill would not have enjoyed seeing British "nobility" derided even in support of a war against evil.

Re: Six Pix: Trains

Pardon me, twists not twits, although there is a kind of humor in the misspelling.
